In the abstract paintings and wooden pieces by Annabel Ossel in Near Collisions, the interaction of colour is the motivating force. Annabel’s paintings are mostly hard-edged, sometimes with transparent overlays and marks contained within selected areas. Shapes can be random and asymmetric and are secondary but integral to colour. Together they form a visual conversation that produces animated compositions.

The painted wooden constructions, using discarded and new material, are a more recent direction in Annabel’s practice. They are almost an extension of the two-dimensional painting, asserting their presence by their occupation in space. In these pieces, form leads colour, creating an opposing dynamic to the paintings.

There is no specific narrative theme running through Annabel’s work, but sometimes her inner thoughts or emotions seep in. Some pieces can also act as visual metaphors for myriad issues affecting the outside world. The titles give clues to possible meanings: Your Flag or Mine and Sunlit Uplands are political, while Losing My Identity and Drawn by Your Magnetism suggest the personal. Some are more ambiguous: Near Collisions, could allude to the possibility of an asteroid hitting the earth in 2030, or could refer to a clash of personalities.

London born, now Bedfordshire based, Annabel has been painting since 2005 and for several years was a member of a cooperative gallery in Bedford, exhibiting there and in other local galleries and venues. Following a career as a picture researcher for books and other media she gained a BA in Art History followed by an MA in Fine Art from the University of Hertfordshire. Her practice includes collages, screen and digital prints. One medium tends to inform another, creating a continuous basis for new work.
